Duncan Howlett Forest

Back to Western Maine Region

Location: Lovell

Year Acquired: 1996

Acreage: 308

Donor: National Trust for Historic Preservation

Description: This forest was named for the founder of Maine Woodland Owners, Duncan Howlett. He was instrumental in bringing this land gift to Maine Woodland Owners. The 308 acre parcel was donated to Maine Woodland Owners in 1996 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The forest is located in the western Maine town of Lovell. It is situated southeast of Sabattus Mountain and southwest of Dan Charles Pond. The Kezar River is east of the forest and actually forms a portion of the forest’s boundary. Typical of many woodland parcels in this area, most of this property was cleared as open farmland and pasture. As agriculture waned in the late 19th and early 20th century, the land was allowed to naturally revert to forestland.

Key Features: The most striking feature of this property is the Kezar River which runs through, and adjacent to the forest.
