Land Acquisition Fund

Maine Woodland Owners launched its Land Acquisition Fund in 2021 to serve as an investment in the future of both Maine Woodland Owners and Maine's forests. This effort ensures that we are ready to make financial commitments to high priority parcels placed on the market, as was the Standish property in 2018.

By developing a designated fund to support our conservation goals, Maine Woodland Owners will be able to seize opportunities when they arise and get a head-start on large strategic campaigns for specific parcels.

This fund relies on private donations and is used to help reach agreements with landowners to acquire woodland properties with significant conservation value. Donations will not be credited to a specific parcel and funds will be spent only on acquisitions approved by the Maine Woodland Owners Board of Directors.

Maine Woodland Owners created its Land Trust Program in 1991 to respond to a growing interest from woodland owners seeking options. We now conserve in fee and easement over 11,000 acres in 52 municipalities across Maine. All 76 parcels that we own, located in 14 Maine counties, are open to the public.

The goal is to raise $25,000 for the Rapid Response Land Acquisition Fund during this year's Annual Appeal. Please consider giving an additional contribution in your end-of-year gift to help build this Fund.

A Leap of Faith for Conservation

The original Watchic Woods Conservation Watershed parcel, shown with the yellow border, is 289 acres. The purchase of the second parcel (in red) allowed us to conserve another 134 acres of forest.
