Winkumpaugh Forest

Back to Down East Region

Location: Ellsworth

Year Acquired: 2019

Acreage: 60

Donor: Charles and Sandra Galley

The Galley’s donated this parcel to the Maine Woodland Owners land trust in July of 2019. It was part of land that Charles Galley inherited from family. His grandmother was from North Ellsworth and his great-grandfather’s house is at the head of the Winkumpaugh Road and is buried across the street.

The land’s terrain rolls gently on rocky ground and is drained by Tannery Brook. Tall, shady trees keep the water cool – an important environmental benefit forested lands provide. Elsewhere the woods are dominated by young timber, vigorously regenerating a recently harvested area. White pine, spruce, balsam fir, red oak, and beech have filled the growing space beneath scattered, but much larger, pines and hemlocks.
